Cold season is upon us!

What tricks do you have for fighting colds?

Zinc? Vitamin C? Chicken soup? Homemade concoctions? Salt water? Hydrogen Peroxide in the ears? Vicks? Airborne? Sweating and steaming?

Share your tips!

All the above and WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY. Also don't be shy in telling sick people to keep their germs to themselves.

Hey, I take offense at that!!!!! (Okay, maybe I'm a little over four feet tall but not much....)

At the first sign of anything (a couple of days ago I felt a cold/strep/something coming on and followed my usual protocol), I do peroxide in the ears, begin taking Oil of Oregano, and have a chiropractic adjustment. Actually, I had Doc adjust me before leaving work that day and within an hour I felt 100% better but I still did the peroxide and O of O. Works every time.

BUT, I begin with the foundation of proper nutrition so my immune system is pretty healthy.

Ironically, now that we homeschool my kids are rarely sick! Prevention is a big key. Wash your hands frequently. Rest if you are tired and feel if you feel like you are coming down with something. Just resting can head off a major cold.

Other than that, once you are sick, eat citrus fruits--oranges, grapefruit, pineapple. Vitamin C only has a 3month shelf life, so suppliments probably aren't worth much. Get plenty of rest. I am one to treat symptoms.

Hydrogen Peroxide in the ears?

I thought this was a joke, but if Mona does it, it must be the real deal.

I don't do anything different except more hand washing and keep a four foot halo around me if at all possible.

I think I'll try peroxide in the ears next time I feel a cold coming on.

Airborne if I feel it coming on.

Rest.

Fluids.

Tylenol to help with the aches/pains.

My friend says that taking garlic supplements works for her.

With cold season upon us, here's what I do. First, I keep the windows closed as a cold front approaches. I watch lots of people get sick 1-3 days after a cold front arrives as the front seems to act as a bulldozer sending the germs just ahead of it. If I feel a cold coming on, I get lots of rest, drink lots of water, and eat foods high in nutritional value. I fought off a cold just recently by doing the same.

I was talking with a doctor about it once and he did say never, ever, ever use peroxide in your neti pot. He did it once (I can't believe he did!!) and said it's not a good idea.

Why do you use peroxide in your ears? I use olive oil if my ears are blocked ~ had a silly conversation with my doc once about the type to use (if it's winter, would using chilli flavoured help warm my ears up? garlic is meant to have healing properties, so would that help more? basil smelt nice...) she's said since that she's always had to resist the temptation to tell people to just use 'ordinary' olive oil!

I used peroxide in my ears last night.

It's like a party in your ear!

Yep, kind of tickles, doesn't it? I bet if you did it again today, it wouldn't be as wild of a party. (but can you imagine having a large scale contained party in your sinuses?????? )

Aga, there is some evidence that we contract more germs through our ear canals than through our nasal passages, and the peroxide kills them. I was a little skeptical at first but figured I'd give it a shot since it couldn't hurt me, and it may even help. It made a big difference in how I felt. That was a couple of years ago and now I use it any time I begin to feel a little under the weather.

I mentioned to my Doc earlier this week that I was going to do that and he thought maybe I had congestion in my ears and offered to adjust them. (did you know they can do that? works wonders with babies' ear infections) I explained what I was going to do, and why, and he had never heard of it before but ended up trying it himself the next day when he felt as though he was coming down with a cold. It worked for him too.

I had my ears adjusted once. If I can help it, it will never happen again. It was the most painful thing I've ever had a chiropractor do! I love my chiropractor, but he's not touching my ears with my permission ever again! They were red and irritated for a good 2-3 hours afterward, and it did nothing for me to make me feel any better.

I am currently battling a cold. It came on suddenly. I'm reading all the suggestions with great interest. =)

How can a chiropractor adjust your ears? The outside portion is made up of cartledge, everything else is skull and jaw bones.

Well, there ya go!! I've watched him do it before. Whatever he does fixes the ear canal so that anything that's not supposed to be there can drain.

the one time that I had my ears adjusted, it was a sort of a quick but hard "yank" up and back. It was extremely painful.

Sounds like it's to open up the sinuses and equal out the pressure.

I use a supplement called cold fx, which works fantastically for me. I used to have the flu injection but usually ended up with the flu and occasionally pneumonia, now I don't have the injection and don't end up with pneumonia.

I am addicted to purel hand sanitizer.
I have a little bottle in my pocket, and I use it all the time, especially after visiting a public bathroom, and before I eat.

Also, ZiCam seems to really knock a cold down if you use it after the first symptoms......a sniffle, sneeze, etc.....

Rush is right.....this stuff WORKS!!!

I strongly advise against using a K-bar to remedy an itch in your ear.( K-Bar is the fighting knife issues to Marines in battle)

Oregano oil

If you have ever tried a few drops you can imagine how it could kill a virus.

"drops"?!?!?!? Oh my!! I take it in gelcap form.

The brand of echinacea that we sell (Standard Process) says that you can tell the quality of an echinacea supplement by chewing it or letting it dissolve in your mouth. If it's a high quality, it should tingle. Well, I tried it----it was more like chewing on a 9-volt battery!!!!!! Now at the office, we issue an echinacea challenge to see if people will try it. Oddly enough, it's the guys who are chicken. Mostly women will try it. So funny. I was the first one to try it, then Doc tried it, but the big strapping football/wrestling star manly man doctor is too scared to try it.

This is good to know about your ears. I kinda wondered why I wasn't getting sick as often when I first started swimming. It seemed my hair was always wet. But I always got water stuck in my ears and used rubbing alcohol to pop it out. I guess it must have been killing the germs as well. This is good to know.
