Guys, I need a new set of tires for my Ford Escort Wagon (1997). I do mostly city driving in a Midwest City that has very poor snow ploying. I can't afford the best tires out there, in fact I may just buy two for the front. (front wheel Drive). I've used Firestone 380s in the past and usually have good luck with those. What are your recomendations?

I've been using Big O branded tires for a few years now. I'm very pleased. They perform well and seem to be cheaper than the big name tires.

I just saw a news segment on places selling tires and that there is a danger in buying tires that are 6 years old or older. Places are selling unused tires saying that they are new, but in actuality, can be more than 6 years old. The danger is that in older tires, the tread falls off, causing an accident and even death. SO, whatever tire you get, make sure that the date on the tire (stated somewhere in the numbers) is newer than 6 years (or 4 years since they'll be on your car for a few years.)

The Tire Rack is always my favorite place to shop for tires: http://www.tirerack.com/ Even if you don't buy tires there, you can always use the site to read the reviews on tires you might want to buy. I've ordered from them quite a few times and have been happy with their service. If you really want to be safe in the Winter, get snow tires. Many places, like the Tire Rack, sell snow tires already mounted on steel wheels and shipped to your door... all you do is bolt them on. I'd be going no where in my little pick-up if I didn't have snow tires. Not only do they help provided better grip in snow, they help cut through water and slush.

- I think rubber tires would be better.

Rubber wears out too soon. Steel would last longer.
