I asked about forward facing today at the sling clinic that they have after BF group. Head control is a big indicator of readiness and she said in the Moby Wrap to tuck their legs up so their knees are slightly bent and use the broad piece of fabric to help secure them.

Don't allow under 6 months to dangle freely down, it can cause too much strain on their not fully formed hip joints.

So we have some head control to go still before I feel comfortable facing her forward in Moby.

The main thing is to make sure that they're 'sitting in' whatever you're using. So, like Brandy said, their legs aren't dangling free. In the video, every leg dangly position makes sure first that the bum is lower than the legs, and generally that the hips are rotated forward a bit so that the strain is not on the spine. As long as the legs are higher than the bum, there isn't that strain.

Tammy - does he seem uncomfortable? Maybe you could do it with his legs frogged up so that they're not spread apart?

Brandy - I tried Gwen in the Moby forward facing yesterday and she seemed to enjoy it =) I'm still getting the hang of wrapping it and getting her in, though - not quite ready to take 'er out in public! Since watching the video, too, I've found the sling easier too - apparently the idea is to have the rings at 'corsage' position and also to make sure the body of the sling is at or above waist level before putting baby in. That makes a HUGE difference!

Donna - you can also buy an adjustable pouch sling (I didn't even know they existed!!).

I'm not sure if he was uncomfortable or just crabby.

Though the link you gave from the conference does discourage outward facing, so I'm not sure I'll try it again anyway.

For my ring sling, I usually start with the rings on or behind my shoulder so that as I tighten them, they move forward to proper position instead of ending up too low...

Apparently they're supposed to end up in "corsage" position

David still hates being in the sling. He also hates being in the baby k'tan type carrier Ryanne made me. He screams anytime I put him in one. I have tried different positions and he hates them all. I really want to find something he likes.

Emily maybe he would prefer a more structured carrier like a Beco or an Ergo?

Emily how long does he scream?

Also, what positions are you trying him in?

Isabel HATES her head touched by fabric and she likes to face out more than in.

Until I take him out. The longest he has been in the sling is 10 minutes and he cried the whole time. I don't know the names of the positions we have tried, but pretty much all of them that you can do for a newborn with limited head control.

Have you tried popping him in and IMMEDIATELY walking? Sometimes Gwen will settle right down if we just start walking with her. Maybe give him his pacifier and go?

THIS is the only way she will let me/us carry her in the sling. After she falls asleep I can/do lower her and cover side of her head a bit. but she will scream bloody murder.

are his legs getting squished?

I wish you lived here!! I'd take you to the Sling Clinic and have them 'fit' him for you into the sling. It's like magic.

I have tried that one. I have also tried putting him in and immediately going outside to walk. I live in a small town so there are no sling clinics or babywearing groups here, but I wish there were.

well hmmpf to your little man!!

Can you go to Babies R Us or Target and try on a Baby Bjorn with him? He may like the structured-ness of it better.

Some kidlets just don't like them until later on or ever. I hope he's a later on guy.

What do y'all think of this? David hates wraps and slings, but do you think this might work? I REALLY want to find a carrier that works for him.

That one looks great!

Lately I've been wearing Jacob in my mei tai but on my back, he seems to like this one the best.

Awesome Emily!!! Does he like it in front or on your back?

Jacob LOVES being on my back. Good thing cause I can get more done that way!

I haven't tried him on my back yet, just on my front facing me. He has pretty good head and neck control, but sometimes he still lets it flop. I am going to wait a while longer before trying him on my back. (he will be 3 months on Saturday and his head is huge!! in the 90%)

It's definitely a little trickier getting them on your back. I'm still a little nervous when I do it!
