I know. I had to find it after I said that. It's in two places: Duet. 32:10 10 In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye, and Zechariah 2:8 For this is what the LORD Almighty says: "After he has honored me and has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye-

Oh for the love of Pete. For Pete sake. Ok who is Pete and why are so many things being done in his name?

I just remembered one phrase I don't get, it was said in Sunday school today. "Nose out of joint" Noses do not have joints...

"Hot water heater" If it's already hot, why do I need a heater for it?

One phrase I heard in a hymn as a kid that made a different sense to me than what was intended STILL brings back that incorrect meaning everytime I hear it: "Praise the Lamb for sinners slain..." Why praise him for killing off sinners?

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw, piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the pet dogs, cats and their small animals: mice, rats & bugs - lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof, hence the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs."

"Taking the bull by the horns." Supposedly it means to take control of something to help ensure a better outcome. Now, if I've got a bull by the horns: 1) I don't think I'm in control. 2) I REALLY don't think I'm going to like the outcome. Seems to be if you wanted to control a bull, you'd take hold of something else other than his horns.

I've had cats before and I can't say that I have, but the bucket thing is interesting. Not sure how much height you would get from standing on a bucket though. I've got long legs so I would be pretty much just jumping off and hitting the ground.

ORIGINAL: Katie-Scarlet Pot calling the kettle black This comes from when cooking was done over an open fire, and crockery would get blackened by soot. Since both pots and kettles are used to heat things up, they would both get black. Hence the irony of a pot covered with soot telling a kettle that it (the kettle) is black. quote:
The apple of your eye ... I still just don't get it. Apples... eyes? The apple of your eye is your pupil -- the hole in the middle that lets light in. We always instinctively protect our eyes, shielding them from harm because they are vulnerable and very important to us. So when God calls His people the apple of His eye, it's expressing how much He cares for us and wants to protect us.
